FAQ

Why “queer” ukulele? Why not just teach “regular” ukulele classes?

Communal spaces are a very important part of the LGBTQIA+ community. As a group of people who has been socially ostracized and as people who have often had to hide their true selves in our heteronormative society, having a safe place where we can be our authentic selves is sacred. Q.U. aims to be one of those safe spaces. You can find “regular” ukulele classes in lots of places. You can find “queer” ukulele classes HERE!

What kinds of songs do queer ukulele players play?

Some of the songs we’ll do in class are the same as you’d do in any beginning ukulele class. Some of the songs are some of the “queer anthems” we’ve come to know and love. Do you have a song suggestion for us? Email libbywiebel@gmail.com and let me know!

My “Q” stands for “questioning.” Can I join your classes?

Absolutely.

My “A” stands for “ally.” Can I join your classes?

Yes… but please realize that one of the goals is to create an LGBTQIA+ safe, communal space. If you can respect that, then you are welcome.

Are these just beginner classes, or will you be offering more advanced classes, too?

Initially, the classes will be aimed at beginners and advanced beginners. After we get a crop of queer ukulele players who are comfy with the beginning stuff, then, perhaps intermediate classes will be offered. In reality, it depends on where the interest lies. As I figure out the technology, it would also be fun to do some Q.U. play-along events. I’ll keep you posted if you sign up on the mailing list below.

Can my child/tween/teen take Q.U. classes?

Teens would be welcome in regular Q.U. classes, but children younger than that would probably feel out of place. At times, I may offer Queer Teen Ukulele specifically for middle and high school ages. If there is ever enough interest, I will think about offering a kids Q.U. class, too.

Can I have a private Q.U. session?

Yes. Contact me at libbywiebel@gmail.com.

How about live, in-person Q.U. events?

This project was born during the COVID-19 pandemic when we were all stuck at home. It’d be lovely to eventually have a few in-person events, but right now I just can’t think that far ahead. Plus, being online allows people from everywhere, not just the DC metro area, to participate. Check back when the world returns to the new normal.
